October-November: festivals, clear peaks, prime treks
Autumn is Nepal's postcard season. The monsoon washes the dust out of the air, so the Annapurna and Langtang ranges appear from Kathmandu valley viewpoints on clear mornings. Daytime highs of 24-27°C are ideal for sightseeing in the capital's durbar squares and for Pokhara's lakeside.
This is also festival season. Dashain, Nepal's biggest Hindu festival, and Tihar, the festival of lights, both fall in the October-November window and fill Kathmandu with ritual, feasts and family travel. Domestic transport books out around Dashain's main days, so reserve intercity buses and Pokhara flights early. March-April: the spring alternative
Spring runs a close second. Kathmandu days reach 26-29°C, the hillsides below 3,000 m ignite with red rhododendron blooms, and visibility, while slightly hazier than October, still delivers strong mountain views. The spring trekking season opens the high trails again, and Pokhara's paragliding and lake season hits its stride.
Late April brings heat haze that softens long-distance views, and May turns properly hot before the monsoon breaks. Spring suits travellers combining Nepal with Bhutan, since both kingdoms peak in the same window, and families using the Indian school spring-break calendar.
Monsoon and winter: who they suit
June through September concentrates roughly two-thirds of annual rainfall. Trails in the mid-hills turn slippery, leeches appear, mountain flights to Lukla and Pokhara face frequent weather cancellations, and road travel slows with landslides. The one exception is the rain-shadow: Upper Mustang and Dolpo, cut off behind the Annapurnas, stay dry and trekable through monsoon.
December to February offers crisp skies and the year's clearest close-up mountain views for travellers who dress for it. Kathmandu days of 19-22°C are walkable in sun, but nights near 3-5°C bite in unheated hotels, and high passes close. Winter is also when Kathmandu's air pollution peaks, so sensitive travellers should factor that in. Given the September 2026 floods, winter 2026 itineraries should confirm trail and road status a week before departure rather than assuming normal conditions.
