For most Western travellers the answer is no: citizens of the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Canada, Australia and dozens of other countries can enter Morocco without a visa for up to 90 days for tourism. But travellers from India, much of Africa and parts of Asia do need paperwork, and since 2022 Morocco has run an e-visa system that lets many of them apply online instead of visiting a consulate. Here is exactly where each passport group stands.
Who can visit Morocco without a visa?
Morocco's visa-free list is a long one. Ordinary passport holders from all EU and EFTA states, all Gulf states, the United States, the United Kingdom (British citizens), Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, China, Brazil, Mexico, Russia, Turkey, South Korea, Singapore and Malaysia, among others, get 90 days visa-free for tourism, according to Morocco's published visa policy. Shorter stays apply to a handful of nationalities, such as 30 days for Hong Kong and Kazakhstan passports.
If you are visa-exempt, the formalities are light but not zero. The UK Foreign Office advises that your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your arrival date, that you get an entry stamp on arrival (missing stamps have caused problems at departure), and that damaged passports can mean refusal. Who needs the Morocco e-visa?
Morocco launched its electronic visa on 10 July 2022 through the official portal acces-maroc.ma, and it now covers two groups:
Unconditional e-visa: ordinary passport holders from countries including India, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Israel, Jordan, Guatemala, Benin and Brunei can apply online with no other visa required. This is the route most Indian and Southeast Asian travellers will use.
Conditional e-visa: nationals of most other non-exempt countries can apply online instead of trekking to an embassy if they hold a valid visa or residence permit from a Schengen state, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand or the UAE (residence permit only). In practice, anyone who already travels to the West qualifies.
A small number of nationalities cannot use the e-visa at all and must apply through a Moroccan diplomatic mission. Fees and processing times change, so confirm the current figures on acces-maroc.ma itself and apply at least two weeks before departure rather than the night before.

Common pitfalls to avoid
Do not mail your passport to or through Morocco; the UK Foreign Office warns this is prohibited and carrying someone else's passport invites extra scrutiny. If you arrive from a polio-affected country you may be asked for a polio vaccination certificate. And remember the dirham is a closed currency: cash worth 100,000 dirhams or more must be declared on entry and exit.
