Verdict for Indian travellers: pick Krabi if you want limestone islands, calmer beaches and cheaper longtails per boat; pick Phuket if you want direct flights, Patong nightlife and mall convenience. On price they are near-identical — Thailand is visa-free 60 days for Indians since 25 July 2024, flights from Delhi or Mumbai are 4–5 hours to either via Bangkok (Phuket also has non-stops 4 h 15 m from Delhi on IndiGo in season), and a couple spends INR 6,000–9,000 a day in both on a mid-range plan. The real difference is feel: Krabi is Ao Nang + Railay + Phi Phi on a boat budget, Phuket is a full city-island with 30 beaches and a party road. Beaches and island hopping
Krabi's beach is not one beach but a speed: Railay's Phra Nang Cave Beach is a limestone amphitheatre reached only by boat, Ao Nang is the base, and Hong Island, Koh Poda and the 4 Islands are 15–30 minutes by longtail. You hire the whole boat (THB 2,500–3,500 or INR 6,000–8,400), split four ways it beats Phuket's per-person speedboats. Phuket gives you choice — Patong for action, Kata and Karon for families, Kamala and Nai Harn for quiet, Mai Khao for almost-empty sand near the airport. The trade is distance: Phuket is a 540 sq km island, so you will scooter or Grab between beaches; in Krabi everything leaves from Ao Nang's one pier. If your album shot is limestone cliffs and emerald water, Krabi photographs better; if you want beach-hop variety without a boat, Phuket wins.
Nightlife and food
This is the clearest split. Phuket has Bangla Road in Patong — clubs, live bands, rooftop bars, plus Phuket Town's shophouses and weekend night market. Krabi has Ao Nang Center Point bars and Railay's low-key Walking Street — you will not get a Bangla night in Krabi. For Indian food both have it, but Phuket has 15+ Indian restaurants (Patong, Kata, Phuket Town) vs Ao Nang's 5–6. If a dal and naan for the kids matters, Phuket is less hunting. Both serve halal seafood and veg; Krabi's night market (Landmark Night Market, free entry) is cheaper and more local than Phuket's.

Delhi–Krabi is always via Bangkok (Thai Lion, Thai AirAsia via DMK or Thai via BKK), 6 h 15 m total, INR 15,000–21,000 return — slightly cheaper than the non-stop but with a layover. Best months to go
Both share Thailand's Andaman season: November to April is dry and high-visibility (28–32°C), December to March the calmest seas for Phi Phi and Hong Island. May to October is southwest monsoon — September is the wettest (Phuket averages ~400 mm, Krabi similar; boats still run but trips get cancelled on swell). Hotel rates drop 30–40% June to August, same as Bangkok's new clusters. If you must go in monsoon, pick Kata/Karon on Phuket — they face southwest and still swim on westerlies; Railay in Krabi can get surf that closes the cave beach at high tide.
Choose Krabi if / choose Phuket if
Choose Krabi if: you want limestone cliffs and island photos over nightlife, a cheaper private longtail for the family, a quieter Ao Nang/Railay base, or you are pairing Railay with Koh Yao Noi or Koh Lanta (both 30–60 minutes by boat). It is also the cheaper honeymoon if you avoid overwater — Railay's bungalows are half Phuket's 5-star.
Choose Phuket if: you want a non-stop flight from Delhi, Bangla and Phuket Town nightlife, more Indian restaurants, shopping (Jungceylon, Central) and hospital-grade clinics, or you are coming with teens who want shows, water parks and beach variety without hiring a boat every day.
