One administrative note for 2026: after Vietnam's 2025 local-government mergers, the former Hoi An city is now a ward inside Da Nang municipality. For travellers nothing changes. The UNESCO-listed old town, the tailors and the lantern-lit streets are exactly where they always were.

Stay in Da Nang if you want the beach plus a city
Da Nang works like a proper resort city. Stay in Hoi An if you want atmosphere
Hoi An trades beachfront for character. The UNESCO World Heritage old town compresses centuries of merchant history into walkable streets: assembly halls, a covered Japanese bridge, heritage houses and the famous tailors. Evenings are the point: lanterns light the streets, boats drift the river and the night market hums. Food travellers get cao lau noodles found nowhere else, white-rose dumplings and a banh mi shop with a global reputation.
Hoi An suits couples, culture-first travellers and slow evenings. Note the trade-off honestly: the old town is small and tourist-dense in peak season, rooms with real character cost more than equivalent Da Nang space, and you will transfer from Da Nang airport on arrival and departure.
