Travel loyalty programmes and airlines spent August 2026 repricing what used to be included. Air France-KLM's Flying Blue split award tickets on its own flights into Light, Standard and Flex tiers from 8 September, keeping headline mileage prices but removing benefits from the cheapest awards. American Airlines raised Admirals Club membership by up to 75% from 23 August, and Hilton quietly cut the payout on its Best Rate Guarantee from 25% to 10% on 20 August.
The pattern is unbundling: the entry price stays visible and stable while flexibility, lounge access, guests or cabin space become paid extras. Jetstar applies the same logic to cabin bags, charging from A$25 for overhead-bin space from February 2027. Premium credit cards are the main exception, used as the cheaper route back in: the Citi AAdvantage Executive card still includes full Admirals Club membership, and American Express added more than 350 hotels to its Fine Hotels + Resorts and The Hotel Collection programmes.

Flying Blue Light, Standard and Flex awards: what changed on 8 September
On 19 August 2026, Air France-KLM announced that from 8 September award tickets on Air France and KLM-operated flights would be sold in three bundles, Light, Standard and Flex, mirroring its cash fare families. The change went live on schedule.
Light is priced at the previous saver level, so the headline price has not risen, but it removes benefits that used to be included. A Light business award has no lounge access or advance seat selection, one 32kg checked bag and no changes or refunds. Standard restores lounge access, two bags and free seat selection at check-in, with a €70 fee for changes or cancellations. Flex adds seat selection at booking, full refunds and changes for the fare difference only, with lower cash surcharges on long-haul.

In economy, early examples showed a transatlantic award at around 25,000 miles for Light and 30,000 for Standard. Partner-airline awards and La Première are unaffected, and Platinum, Platinum for Life and Ultimate members keep their status benefits on Light awards. Admirals Club membership price increase: up to 75% from 23 August
On 23 August 2026, American Airlines raised the standard Admirals Club annual membership from $850 to $1,400 for members without elite status. That is about 65% more than the old new-purchase price and 75% more than the old $800 renewal rate, which was abolished along with the $50 renewal discount. Pricing now scales by AAdvantage status and no longer distinguishes new purchases from renewals.

Gold, Platinum and Platinum Pro pay $1,350, $1,300 and $1,250. Full membership still covers up to two guests and oneworld partner lounges; the solo tier admits the member only, at around 50 Admirals Club locations. Existing household memberships stay valid until their term ends.
The Citi AAdvantage Executive card still includes full membership with guest and partner-lounge access, which makes it $705 cheaper than standalone general membership. The new grid matches United's 2025 structure ($1,400 All Access, $750 Individual). Delta sells Sky Club membership only to Medallion members.
Jetstar overhead bin fee: A$25 Priority Carry-on from February 2027
In August 2026, Jetstar announced that from 2 February 2027 passengers will pay to use the overhead bins. The fee is sold as "Priority Carry-on" from A$25 one-way, covering a bag up to 56 x 36 x 23cm in the locker plus priority boarding. It is sold only while bin space remains on each flight. Every fare still includes one free underseat bag up to 40 x 30 x 20cm.

The change covers all Jetstar Airways (JQ) domestic, New Zealand and international flights, but not Jetstar Japan (GK) flights or group bookings of 10 or more. Passengers already booked for travel after 2 February 2027 get Priority Carry-on free. Jetstar is also dropping its 7kg carry-on weight limit for a size-based model and ending routine gate weigh-ins.
US ultra-low-cost carriers such as Spirit, Frontier and Allegiant already charge for full-size carry-ons; Jetstar is the first major Australian carrier to do so. The EU is moving the other way: on 7 July 2026 the European Parliament approved rules, expected to apply from 2027, guaranteeing a free personal item and a small cabin bag of up to 7kg on flights within the EU. Hilton Best Rate Guarantee cut: claims now pay 10%, not 25%
For claims filed from 20 August 2026, Hilton's Best Rate Guarantee (marketed as the Price Match Guarantee) pays the matched lower rate plus a 10% discount, down from 25%. The maximum stay covered fell from five nights to three, and every claim must go through Hilton's online form after booking through a Hilton channel. Hilton made no announcement; the change appeared in revised terms on hilton.com and was reported by LoyaltyLobby and Upgraded Points on 21 August.
On a $200 room found for $180 elsewhere, a successful claim is now worth $18 a night rather than $45. The existing conditions still apply: the third-party rate must be at least 1% lower, publicly bookable, and for the same room, dates, cancellation terms and currency.

Hilton now has the weakest payout of the major full-service chains. IHG separately updated its rules on 16 August 2026 to accept rates from login-required Chinese platforms such as Ctrip, Meituan and Fliggy.
Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts adds more than 350 hotels
On 12 August 2026, American Express Travel added more than 350 properties to Fine Hotels + Resorts (FHR) and The Hotel Collection (THC), taking the combined portfolio past 3,400 hotels in 116 countries in FHR's 35th year. Unlike the other changes on this page, this one adds value, and it supports the case for the Platinum card's annual fee.
The benefits themselves did not change. FHR stays booked prepaid through Amex Travel with an eligible card include a $100 property credit, daily breakfast for two, noon check-in, an upgrade when available and guaranteed late check-out. THC requires a two-night minimum and gives a $100 credit, 12pm check-in where available, late check-out and an upgrade when available.
The perks apply only when booked through Amex Travel and paid with an eligible card, mainly the US Platinum family; the hotel's own website rate carries none of them. Before booking, check whether a property is FHR or THC and compare the rate with booking direct. The perks are worth most on multi-night luxury stays. Is the Flying Blue change in September 2026 a devaluation?
In effect, yes. From 8 September 2026, awards on Air France and KLM flights are sold as Light, Standard and Flex. Light keeps today's saver mileage price but removes benefits such as lounge access on business awards and free changes; getting them back via Standard costs about 20–25% more miles on the published examples. Partner-airline awards are unchanged.
How much does Admirals Club membership cost from 23 August 2026?

Which hotel chain has the best price-match guarantee now?
Marriott, which pays the matched lower rate plus 25% off or 5,000 Bonvoy points. Hyatt pays the matched rate plus 20% off or 5,000 points. Since 20 August 2026 Hilton pays only the matched rate plus 10%, for a maximum of three nights.
