Yes, Indian passport holders need a visa for Japan. India is not on Japan's 74-country visa-exemption list, so you must get your visa before you fly, either through a Japanese embassy or consulate or a VFS Global Japan centre in India. Since 1 July 2026 a single-entry tourist visa costs ¥15,000 (about ₹9,200) and a multiple-entry visa ¥30,000, roughly five times the old fees. Standard tourist stays run up to 90 days.
This guide covers who needs what, the documents, the real cost in rupees, processing timelines and the transit rules for layovers, plus how Japan compares with the far cheaper e-visa systems elsewhere in Asia. For the general rules by passport, see our Japan visa rules by passport guide.
Do Indians get visa-free entry or an eVisa?
No. Unlike travellers from the US, UK, EU, Singapore or South Korea, who walk in for up to 90 days with just a passport, Indian nationals must hold a valid visa on arrival at immigration. There is no visa on arrival for Indian tourists and no airport visa counter to fall back on: no visa, no boarding, since airlines face fines for carrying undocumented passengers.
Apply at the Embassy of Japan in New Delhi, the consulates in Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru or Kolkata with jurisdiction over your residence, or far more commonly through VFS Global's Japan centres across major Indian cities. The standard route is a paper application with your passport, photographs, financial statements, employment proof, flight and hotel bookings and a day-wise itinerary, lodged in person or via an accredited agent.
How much does the Japan visa cost from India in 2026?
| Visa type | Fee (yen) | Approx. in rupees* | Stay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single-entry tourist | ¥15,000 | ~₹9,200 | Up to 90 days |
| Multiple-entry | ¥30,000 | ~₹18,400 | Up to 90 days per visit |
| Transit | ¥15,000 bracket | ~₹9,200 | Up to 15 days stopover |
*At about ¥154 to the dollar and ₹94.5 in early September 2026. VFS service charges and any agent fees sit on top of the consular fee, so budget roughly ₹10,000-11,000 all-in for a single-entry application.
The July 2026 hike was Japan's first fee increase since 1978, and it lands as Japan rides a record tourism boom, with 3.44 million visitors in July 2026 alone. Budget the fee early: for a couple, visas alone now cost nearly ₹20,000 before a single hotel night. Our Japan trip cost breakdown from India folds the new fees into full per-person budgets.
Documents Indian applicants need
Requirements vary slightly by consulate, but the core file is consistent. Your passport must be valid for your whole stay (Japan has no six-month rule, though airlines like the cushion). Then: the visa application form with a recent photograph, three to six months of bank statements showing stable funds, salary slips or business proof, confirmed return flights, hotel bookings for every night, and a day-wise itinerary. First-time travellers with thin bank balances get refused more often than anyone else, so a healthy closing balance held for months beats a last-minute deposit.
Processing typically takes five to seven working days once the consulate has your file, longer in the March-April cherry-blossom and October-November autumn rushes. Apply a month before departure in peak season. Track peak timing with our best time to visit Japan from India guide.
Do I need a transit visa for a layover in Japan?
It depends on whether you clear immigration. If you connect airside at Narita or Haneda on a single ticket without entering Japan, you stay in the transit area and need no visa. The moment your itinerary requires leaving the airport, collecting and rechecking bags across airports (the classic Narita-to-Haneda transfer), or an overnight stay landside, you need a transit visa in advance. When booking cheap Delhi-Tokyo-Los Angeles or Mumbai-Osaka-Sydney routings with long connections, check with the airline whether the connection is airside before assuming you are fine.
Visit Japan Web and JESTA: what Indians should know
Visit Japan Web is not a visa. It is a free pre-registration service for immigration and customs QR codes that speeds up arrival, and paper forms still work. It gives visa-required nationalities no entry rights on its own.
JESTA, Japan's planned electronic authorisation for visa-exempt travellers, is aimed at everyone except nationalities like India's: it targets visa-free visitors, is not in force in 2026, and changes nothing for Indian applicants. Ignore third-party sites selling "JESTA applications" for Indian passports.
Frequently asked questions
Can Indians get a Japan visa on arrival?
No. Indian passport holders must obtain their Japan visa before travelling, from an embassy, consulate or VFS centre. There is no visa-on-arrival facility.
How much bank balance is required for a Japan tourist visa from India?
Japan publishes no fixed minimum. Consulates look for stable income and a closing balance that comfortably covers the trip, typically built over three to six months of statements. A sudden large deposit just before applying hurts more than it helps.
How long does Japan visa processing take in India?
Usually five to seven working days after the consulate receives a complete file, longer around cherry-blossom season and autumn foliage peaks. Apply at least a month ahead in those windows.
Do I need a transit visa for Japan from India to the USA?
Only if you must clear immigration: airport changes, landside hotel nights or rechecking luggage outside transit. Pure airside connections on one ticket need no visa, but confirm airside status with your airline.
