Labor Day weekend 2026 — the last long weekend of American summer — will send travellers to Seattle, Orlando and Boston at home and to Rome, Vancouver and London abroad, with roundtrip domestic flights averaging $750, according to AAA's holiday forecast published on 24 August. International roundtrips are averaging $1,240, roughly 4% cheaper than last year, while road trippers face a sharply higher fill-up than last summer: the AAA national average for a gallon of regular stood at $4.10 on 24 August, up from $3.19 on Labor Day 2025.
The holiday falls on Monday, 7 September. AAA's booking data shows demand concentrated on classic end-of-summer formats — Alaska cruises, European city breaks and national-park road trips — and the association says its members are already booking 2027 cruises and tours to avoid selling out. "Travelers are seeking memorable experiences, and these top Labor Day destinations reflect that desire," said Stacey Barber, vice president of AAA Travel.
Where are travellers going for Labor Day 2026?
AAA's domestic list rewards the Pacific Northwest and the theme-park capitals. Seattle takes the number one spot — a cruise-embarkation port as much as a destination — followed by Orlando, Boston, Denver and New York. Anchorage and Vancouver-adjacent Alaska itineraries keep the cruise theme running through the rankings.
The international top ten is Europe-heavy, led by Rome, with Vancouver, London, Dublin and Paris rounding out the top five. Notably, three Canadian cities — Vancouver, Calgary and Halifax — make the list even as Canadian visits to the United States keep falling, evidence that the exchange-rate-friendly reverse flow is still strong.
| Rank | Domestic | International |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Seattle, WA | Rome, Italy |
| 2 | Orlando, FL | Vancouver, Canada |
| 3 | Boston, MA | London, England |
| 4 | Denver, CO | Dublin, Ireland |
| 5 | New York, NY | Paris, France |
| 6–10 | Chicago; Anaheim/LA; Las Vegas; Anchorage; Atlanta | Calgary; Barcelona; Athens; Amsterdam; Halifax |
How much do Labor Day flights and hotels cost?
Domestic roundtrip airfares are averaging $750, up 2% on last Labor Day, but the headline number hides a sharper increase on the routes people actually want: flights to the top ten domestic destinations are running about 20% above 2025, near $800. International roundtrips buck the trend at $1,240, down 4% year over year — one reason European cities dominate the outbound list.
For travellers still shopping, the cheapest remaining options are midweek departures and secondary airports; our guide to the cheapest days to fly over Labor Day breaks down how fares move by day. Prices this close to departure rarely improve, so treat today's quotes as the ceiling rather than waiting for a dip.
What are the best and worst times to drive?
INRIX, AAA's traffic-data partner, says the compressed holiday window concentrates trips onto Thursday afternoon and Friday, when getaway traffic stacks on top of normal commuting. Its advice: leave early. The best and worst windows for the September 3–7 period:
- Thursday 3 September — best before 1pm; worst 2pm–7pm
- Friday 4 September — best before 12pm; worst 12pm–8pm
- Saturday 5 September — best before 10am; worst 1pm–5pm
- Sunday 6 September — minimal traffic impact expected
- Monday 7 September — best before 12pm; worst 2pm–5pm
The worst metro delays are forecast on Boston's I-95 South to Providence (Friday 3:30pm, more than double normal, +105%), Chicago's I-65 North from Indianapolis (Friday 5:15pm, +76%), Los Angeles' I-5 South to San Diego (Friday 6pm, +75%), New York's Garden State Parkway to the Jersey Shore (Thursday 4:15pm, +68%) and Atlanta's I-20 West to Birmingham (Monday 7:30pm, +65%). Rental demand peaks on Friday 4 September, which Hertz expects to be its busiest pick-up day, with Denver, Las Vegas, Orlando, Los Angeles and Boston the strongest markets.
Why gas prices are the holiday's biggest cost increase
The national average for regular gasoline was $4.10 a gallon on 24 August per AAA's daily fuel gauge — roughly 90 cents, or 28%, above the $3.19 recorded on Labor Day 2025, when crude was cheaper. A 700-mile round trip in a 30-mpg car therefore costs about $96 in fuel versus $74 last year. Road trippers heading for the parks — AAA says many renters drive from Denver and Las Vegas to Rocky Mountain, Arches, Zion and the Grand Canyon — should budget the difference in.
Breakdown risk scales with volume: over last year's holiday weekend AAA responded to more than 400,000 roadside-assistance calls, led by flat tyres, dead batteries and tows. Its pre-trip checklist is unchanged — tyres, battery, fluids, plus an emergency kit with water, snacks and jumper cables — and leaving earlier also means arriving before the afternoon heat that kills weak batteries. If you are flying instead, build in extra time; our guide to how early to get to the airport covers the peak-day exceptions.
Cruises, parks and Europe: what is actually selling
AAA's agents report three booking patterns behind the destination list: Alaska cruises feeding Seattle and Anchorage, river cruises in Europe, and national-park itineraries by rental car. Travellers drawn to the second pattern will find our Europe river cruising guide explains how Rhine, Danube and Douro itineraries differ and when low water becomes a factor. Guided tours are also outselling independent trips for European city breaks, AAA says, with travellers paying for planned itineraries, meals and transfers rather than researching them solo.
For anything still available, the trade-off is price versus choice. Holiday-weekend cruises and popular park lodges have been sold out for months; the realistic late options are flights with connections, city hotels with flexible cancellation, or shifting the same trip to mid-September, when both airfares and room rates drop.
