When is typhoon season and should you avoid it?
The Philippines averages around 20 tropical cyclones a year, with the season running roughly June to November and peaking July to October. Most curve north toward Luzon, which is why Manila and northern destinations take the heaviest hits while Palawan, sitting in the rain shadow, often escapes with showers. A typhoon does not just mean rain: the coastguard suspends ferry crossings, and a single storm can strand island-hoppers for two to three days.
Travelling in season is still possible with the right design. Keep the first and last nights near Manila, avoid tight same-day ferry-to-flight connections, and buy travel insurance that explicitly covers weather disruption. If your dates fall between July and October and cannot move, Palawan and Boracay are statistically safer bets than Siargao or Batanes.
