Average Cost of a River Cruise in Europe: 2026 Price Guide

A European river cruise typically costs US$400 to US$1,000 per person per day, according to River Cruise Advisor, or US$3,500 to US$7,500 per person for a seven- or eight-night sailing before flights. Lead-in fares, the cheapest cabin on the cheapest date, start lower: on 20 October 2026 Viking advertised its eight-day 2027 Rhine Getaway and Danube Waltz from US$2,399 per person, with the cheapest departures then listed at US$2,499 (about US$357 a night), and the eight-day Rhine and Danube lead-ins we checked ran from US$1,823 (Emerald, Danube Explorer) to US$5,990 (Tauck, The Romantic Rhine). Viking's river net yield, its revenue per passenger per day after commissions, flights and other direct costs, was US$660 in the first half of 2026, against US$593 on its ocean ships. Ships are small (a Viking Longship carries 190 guests), and most lines include wine and beer with meals, Wi-Fi and at least one daily excursion. Prices swing with the month, the cabin grade and the river.

How much does a European river cruise cost by cruise line tier?

River Cruise Advisor sorts the market into three tiers by typical spending per person per day. Entry-level, less bundled lines (Viking, CroisiEurope, Riviera Travel) run up to about US$600 a day on a more streamlined fare; gratuities and some excursions usually cost extra, though CroisiEurope and Riviera include drinks at the bar as well as with meals. Mid-range, mostly inclusive lines (AmaWaterways, Avalon Waterways, Emerald Cruises) run up to about US$800 a day; Emerald includes gratuities, while AmaWaterways and Avalon charge them separately but serve complimentary cocktails before dinner. Luxury all-inclusive lines (Riverside, Scenic, Tauck, Uniworld) typically exceed US$800 a day in peak season, with premium drinks, excursions, gratuities and Wi-Fi included. Lead-in fares do not always follow the tiers: on 20 October 2026 Emerald advertised its eight-day 2027 Jewels of the Rhine from US$2,316, below Viking's US$2,399 for the Rhine Getaway.

Promotions move these bands constantly. Viking's Fall Sale, for bookings made from 1 to 31 October 2026, offers special fares, a US$25 deposit on all river itineraries, reduced or free international airfare on select itineraries and savings of up to US$5,000 per couple on select 2027 departures, a reminder never to pay brochure rate without checking the deals page first. River Cruise Advisor names wave-season offers (January to March), early-booking promotions and bundled airfare deals as the usual sources of the best prices. When is the cheapest month for a European river cruise?

Early March and November priced lowest on the 2027 Viking Rhine Getaway departures listed on 20 October 2026: US$2,499 per person, about 22 per cent below the dearest, 4 September, at US$3,199. The 2027 Danube Waltz showed the same pattern: US$2,499 on 7 November against US$3,199 on 14 September. Early spring brings blossom-season scenery with a real chance of chilly, grey days. On the Rhine Getaway, April to July departures sat in between (US$2,899 to US$2,999), late August to early October cost most (US$3,099 to US$3,199), and the 30 October sailing fell back to US$2,599.

Water levels are the other seasonal gamble. Hot, dry Augusts have repeatedly forced itinerary changes on the Rhine and Danube, with passengers bussed around shallow stretches, as covered in our Rhine and Danube low-water guide. Autumn is not immune: on 19 October 2026 Riviera Travel listed eight Rhine departures between 16 and 24 October rerouted because its ships could not pass the Rhine Gorge. Price the whole trip, too: flights to the embarkation city, such as Amsterdam, Basel or Budapest, a pre-cruise hotel night and insurance sit outside a cruise-only fare. What extras push the final bill up?

Four add-ons decide whether the fare is the price. Gratuities add US$15 to US$25 per person per day on lines that do not include them, River Cruise Advisor estimates, or US$210 to US$350 per couple over seven days; Emerald, Riverside, Tauck and Uniworld include them in the fare. Drinks packages cover what the included wine and beer do not: Viking's Silver Spirits package costs US$27 per person per day, and both guests in a stateroom must buy it for the whole cruise. Optional excursions are sold alongside the included tours on Viking, and AmaWaterways notes that some shore excursions cost extra on select sailings. Single supplements punish solo travellers: AmaWaterways charges 50 per cent of the per-person double-occupancy fare, or 100 per cent for suites, though it also runs solo-traveller promotions.

There are no inside cabins on a Viking Longship such as the Viking Sigrun pictured above: all 95 staterooms face the river, and the lead Standard Staterooms have a half-height picture window. Paying up buys a French balcony or veranda and a higher deck, not always more space: Viking's French Balcony Stateroom (135 sq ft) is smaller than its Standard (150 sq ft). Deck still moves the price: on Riviera Travel's 6 July 2027 Blue Danube departure, before a one-week discount ending 21 October, the upper deck cost 30 per cent more than the lower deck (£3,249 against £2,499). Port charges are generally folded into the advertised fare on the major lines, so the headline price is closer to the final one than in ocean cruising.

Are European river cruises worth the money?

For travellers who value unpacking once, docking in town centres, and excursions included in the fare, yes: the per-day premium over ocean cruises buys time and convenience. Budget travellers who skip excursions and drink little get less of that value and should look hard at entry-level lines.

Do river cruise prices include flights?

Usually not. Viking and AmaWaterways quote cruise-only fares and sell flights separately or on promotion; Riviera Travel's UK fares include return flights and transfers. Budget flights, transfers, hotels and insurance separately.
