WTM Africa 2027 runs from 7 to 9 April 2027 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC). It is the leading travel trade show on the African continent, and it anchors a cluster of events that turns early April in Cape Town into the busiest week in African travel.
Two-way, not just inbound
WTM Africa is often assumed to be purely about selling Africa to the world. It is genuinely two-directional: African tourism boards, lodges, DMCs and operators meet international buyers, while international destinations also court a growing African outbound market, particularly from South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya.
That dual character makes it more commercially varied than a single-direction inbound mart.
The Cape Town cluster
WTM Africa does not stand alone. ILTM Africa, the invitation-only luxury event, runs 4–6 April 2027 immediately before it, and We Are Africa follows in early May, also in Cape Town.
Luxury-focused suppliers can therefore chain ILTM Africa straight into WTM Africa on one trip. Buyers should plan accommodation early, because the city absorbs several overlapping trade events in the same short window.
What buyers come for
- Safari and lodge product across Southern and East Africa — the continent's flagship offer.
- Ground handling and DMC capability, which is the practical constraint on selling Africa.
- Emerging destinations that lack the budget for a stand at ITB or WTM London.
- Conservation and community tourism credentials, increasingly required by European and North American buyers.
Practical notes
- Early April is autumn in Cape Town — among the best months to visit, which is part of the point.
- The CTICC is central, close to the V&A Waterfront and walkable from many hotels.
- Post-show familiarisation trips to the Winelands, Garden Route and safari regions are a substantial part of the value; build time in.
- WTM's regional editions have distinct buyer bases — a stand at WTM London does not carry over here.
What sells Africa to international buyers
Beyond the safari flagship, the recurring buyer questions concern reliability rather than product quality: consistency of ground handling, driver and guide standards, vehicle condition, medical evacuation arrangements, and how an operator handles a problem several hours from a town.
Suppliers who answer those directly, with references, get further than those leading with photography. Africa is generally sold on trust in the operator, and buyers know it.
Conservation credentials are commercial
European, North American and Australian buyers increasingly require evidence of conservation and community benefit rather than a statement of values — how much revenue reaches communities, what land is under protection, how anti-poaching is funded.
Lodges and operators that can document this have a genuine commercial advantage at WTM Africa, because those buyers now have to satisfy their own clients' questions. It is one of the few markets where a sustainability claim is checked rather than assumed.
