Explora Journeys cancels Middle East and Red Sea sailings for the entire winter 2027-28 season, the luxury line of Switzerland-based MSC Group confirmed on 21 August 2026, citing "a careful review of deployment plans" that takes into account the evolving situation in the region.
The decision removes two ships from the area. Explora I was scheduled to sail Arabian Gulf itineraries from November 2027 to February 2028 and will instead be redeployed to South America. Explora V, due to enter service in late 2027, was to operate a short Red Sea season from late January to mid-March 2028 and will now offer Mediterranean itineraries instead.
Affected bookings are being cancelled automatically with a full refund of the cruise fare, plus a future cruise credit of EUR 250 per person (for up to two guests per booking), redeemable on any new booking made within a year. Replacement schedules for both ships open for reservations on 9 September 2026.
The move is a forward cancellation more than 15 months out — a sign that cruise planners see no near-term return to normal in a region that was, until recently, one of luxury cruising's fastest-growing winter markets.
Which Explora Journeys cruises are cancelled?
Every Middle East and Red Sea departure in the 2027-28 winter programme is affected. The line said the decision reflects its "commitment to providing guests and travel advisors with clarity and confidence", while stressing that the Arabian Gulf and Red Sea "remain destinations of strong interest" for future deployment.
| Ship | Cancelled itinerary | Dates | Redeployed to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Explora I | Arabian Gulf | November 2027 – February 2028 | South America |
| Explora V | Red Sea | Late January – mid-March 2028 | Mediterranean |
Explora V is one of several vessels still to join the six-ship fleet MSC Group has committed to the brand — a pipeline that sits within a broader industry building spree covered in our guide to new cruise ship deliveries in 2026.
What do booked guests get?
Guests do not need to take any action. Explora Journeys is processing automatic cancellations with a full refund of the cruise fare. On top of the refund, each guest receives a EUR 250 future cruise credit, capped at two guests per booking, valid on a new reservation made within twelve months.
Travel advisors with clients on the cancelled voyages can rebook them onto the replacement South America and Mediterranean programmes from 9 September 2026, when the new schedules go on sale.
Why are cruise lines avoiding the Middle East and Red Sea?
Explora Journeys is not acting alone. Sister brand MSC Cruises has also pulled MSC World Europa from its planned Middle East season for winter 2027-28, repositioning the LNG-powered flagship to the Western Mediterranean.
The retreat has been building since the Iran war destabilised the region. Explora had already cancelled its Middle East sailings for the coming winter earlier in 2026, and revised deployment plans for Explora II, as lines concluded that Gulf and Red Sea seasons could not be operated — or sold — with confidence. Aviation tells a similar story: as we reported in our analysis of the Gulf airlines' rebound from 2026 airspace disruption, regional carriers spent much of the year rerouting around closed corridors before traffic began to recover.
For cruise lines, the calculus is harsher than for airlines. Itineraries are sold 18-24 months ahead, ships cannot be rerouted overnight, and a winter season depends on guests being willing to fly into the region months in advance. Cancelling early protects the brand from a repeat of short-notice disruption — and frees ships for markets where demand is proven.
What does this mean for the winter 2027-28 luxury market?
The redeployments concentrate more luxury tonnage in South America and the Mediterranean, two regions already absorbing capacity displaced from the Middle East. That could pressure pricing in peak Mediterranean winter weeks, but it also plays to demand that remains strong: the Q2 2026 cruise earnings season showed major operators reporting record bookings despite regional disruption, and orderbooks keep growing — Viking's latest Fincantieri order stretches deliveries out to 2032.
The Arabian Gulf, which had invested heavily in becoming a winter homeporting hub, is the clear loser. Until the security picture stabilises, international lines are likely to keep treating the region as optional rather than core deployment.

When can I book the replacement itineraries?
The new Explora I South America and Explora V Mediterranean schedules will be announced and open for reservations on 9 September 2026.
