IBTM World 2026 runs from 17 to 19 November 2026 at Fira Barcelona Gran Via. It is one of the two major European meetings and events exhibitions, alongside IMEX Frankfurt, and closes the MICE trade year.
What IBTM covers
Convention bureaux, venues, hotel groups, DMCs, event technology and production suppliers exhibit to a hosted and trade buyer base drawn from corporate meeting planners, associations, agencies and incentive houses.
Barcelona itself is one of Europe's strongest congress cities, which gives the show a practical advantage: delegates can inspect large-scale conference infrastructure in the host city while they are there.
November timing
Closing the year has a specific commercial logic. Buyers arrive with the following year's programme largely defined and budgets either set or being finalised, so conversations tend to be concrete rather than exploratory.
It also sits in a busy fortnight — the same week as the Phocuswright Conference in Florida, and two weeks after WTM London.
IBTM or IMEX?
Both are genuine global MICE shows with substantially overlapping exhibitor lists, and the honest answer is that the difference is timing and feel rather than fundamental coverage. IMEX Frankfurt in May is larger; IBTM in November is generally described as more relaxed in pace.
Suppliers with European MICE ambitions and adequate budget do both, which gives two touchpoints with the same buyers six months apart — useful in a sector where decisions run on long cycles.
Practical notes
- Fira Gran Via is in L'Hospitalet, outside central Barcelona, and connected by metro; factor in transit time.
- November in Barcelona is mild — a genuine advantage over northern European shows at the same time of year.
- Hosted-buyer places are qualified and close well in advance.
The hosted buyer diary
IBTM runs a structured hosted-buyer programme with pre-scheduled appointments, and the qualification process assesses genuine buying authority and event volume. Exhibitors receive a diary; buyers receive a schedule they are expected to keep.
The practical consequence is that late registration is costly in a way that is not obvious from the price list. Register late and the buyers with the largest programmes are already fully booked, leaving you with gaps that stand traffic will not fill at a show of this type.
Barcelona as a working example
Barcelona is one of Europe's leading congress destinations, consistently near the top of international association meeting rankings. Buyers attending IBTM are therefore standing in a live demonstration of large-scale congress capability, and the city's convention bureau uses the week accordingly.
