The Aer Lingus US route cuts announced this summer will remove five transatlantic routes from the network of the IAG-owned Irish flag carrier by the end of 2026. Dublin–Denver operates for the last time on 28 September, Dublin–Minneapolis–St Paul ends after 24 October and Dublin–Las Vegas finishes on 3 December, according to schedule details reported by Simple Flying. Two Manchester transatlantic routes — to New York JFK and Orlando — have already been withdrawn following the closure of the airline's Manchester long-haul base, and Dublin–Seattle loses its winter service, becoming summer-seasonal only.
The retrenchment follows a €103 million first-quarter loss and a restructuring plan that will shrink Aer Lingus flying by around 6% and put up to 500 jobs at risk, as reported by RTÉ. For passengers holding bookings beyond the end dates, EU air passenger rights rules give a choice of a full refund or re-routing — details below.
Which Aer Lingus US routes are being cut?
Five US routes disappear in 2026, alongside the seasonal downgrade of Seattle. The Manchester cuts took effect in the spring when Aer Lingus closed its short-lived UK long-haul base; the three Dublin cuts land in the fourth quarter.
| Route | Last flight | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Dublin–Denver | 28 September 2026 | Launched 2024; loads fell to 63.9% in 2025 |
| Dublin–Minneapolis–St Paul | 24 October 2026 | Head-to-head with Delta at its MSP hub |
| Dublin–Las Vegas | 3 December 2026 | Winter loads below 60% |
| Manchester–New York JFK | 23 February 2026 | Manchester base closed 31 March |
| Manchester–Orlando | 31 March 2026 | Manchester–Barbados also ended |
| Dublin–Seattle | Winter dropped | Continues as a summer seasonal route |
US Department of Transportation data for the 12 months to March 2026, cited by Simple Flying, shows why these routes were vulnerable:
- Minneapolis filled just 61.8% of seats, collapsing towards 30% in February, per Cirium figures reported by Thrifty Traveler
- Denver averaged 64.1%, down from 73.7% in 2024
- Las Vegas averaged 71.3%, with winter months below 60%
Why is Aer Lingus cutting US routes?
The short answer is network economics. Aer Lingus says rival transatlantic capacity rose 45% during winter 2025/26, compressing fares just as fuel and supplier costs climbed. On Minneapolis, Delta Air Lines matched Aer Lingus's entry with its own Dublin service from its MSP fortress hub and scheduled roughly 100,500 two-way seats in the market this summer against about 75,100 for Aer Lingus, according to Simple Flying — a textbook example of how hub airports let network carriers defend their home markets.
The route cuts sit inside a wider restructuring. After the €103 million first-quarter loss and a €34 million first-half loss reported by RTÉ, Aer Lingus is trimming flying by about 6% from late September into summer 2027, cutting head-office costs by roughly 25% and consulting on up to 500 redundancies — around 290 head-office roles, 140 cabin crew and 70 pilot positions. The squeeze is not unique to Ireland: as our airline Q2 2026 earnings round-up shows, transatlantic overcapacity and soft US demand have dented margins across the Atlantic, and Lufthansa has cut its own profit outlook for similar reasons.
What happens if I have a booking on a cancelled route?
Because these flights depart the EU or are operated by an EU carrier, EU Regulation 261/2004 applies. When an airline cancels, you are entitled to choose between a full refund of the unused ticket or re-routing to your destination — for Aer Lingus passengers that typically means travel via another of its US gateways or on a partner carrier. Because the cancellations were announced more than 14 days before departure, no additional cash compensation is due. Our guide to flight delay and cancellation passenger rights explains the rules in full.
Practical advice: do not cancel the booking yourself — let Aer Lingus cancel first so you keep the refund/re-route choice. If you booked through a travel agent or online travel agency, the re-accommodation offer will usually come through them.
What do the cuts mean for US–Ireland connectivity?
Dublin remains one of Europe's most convenient transatlantic gateways thanks to US Customs and Border Protection pre-clearance, which lets passengers land in the US as domestic arrivals. That advantage is intact: Aer Lingus keeps its trunk routes to New York, Boston, Chicago and Washington, and the cuts remove thin, loss-making spokes rather than the hub model itself.
Still, Denver, Minneapolis and Las Vegas lose their only nonstop Ireland links, pushing traffic onto one-stop itineraries via US hubs or other European gateways. It also underlines how brutal the North Atlantic has become for sub-scale operators — the same pressure that has pushed Norse Atlantic into sale talks. The bet is that a smaller, denser network restores margin before summer 2027.
Frequently asked questions
Which US routes is Aer Lingus cutting in 2026?
Aer Lingus is ending Dublin–Denver (last flight 28 September 2026), Dublin–Minneapolis–St Paul (24 October) and Dublin–Las Vegas (3 December). Manchester–New York JFK and Manchester–Orlando ended in February and March 2026 when the Manchester base closed, and Dublin–Seattle drops its winter schedule to become summer-seasonal.
Why is Aer Lingus cutting these routes?
The carrier lost €103 million in the first quarter of 2026 amid a 45% jump in rival winter transatlantic capacity, higher fuel and supplier costs and weak loads — Minneapolis filled only 61.8% of seats over the year to March 2026. Aer Lingus is cutting flying by about 6% and up to 500 jobs to restore margins.
Am I entitled to a refund if my Aer Lingus flight is cancelled?
Yes. Under EU Regulation 261/2004 you can choose a full refund or re-routing to your destination, for example via another Aer Lingus US gateway or a partner airline. Because the cancellations were announced more than 14 days in advance, no additional cash compensation applies. Wait for the airline's offer rather than cancelling yourself.
Does Dublin keep US pre-clearance after the cuts?
Yes. US Customs and Border Protection pre-clearance at Dublin Airport is unaffected, and Aer Lingus retains its main trunk routes to cities such as New York, Boston, Chicago and Washington. Passengers in Denver, Minneapolis and Las Vegas, however, lose their only nonstop links to Ireland and will need one-stop connections.
