Thailand welcomed 20,935,135 foreign visitors between January 1 and August 31, 2026, down 3.08% on the same period last year, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports reported on September 7. Tourism revenue is sliding with arrivals: a separate tally put eight-month receipts at 984.32 billion baht, down 2.9%. The ministry still expects full-year numbers to finish close to last year's levels, avoiding an outright annual contraction.

The eight-month data, published by The Nation, shows a sharply split market. China remains Thailand's biggest source at 3,543,272 visitors, up 16.05%, confirming the long-awaited Chinese rebound. But Malaysia, the No. 2 market, fell 11.87% to 2,658,686, and South Korea collapsed 24.78% to just 769,930 visitors.

India held almost flat in third place at 1,536,770 arrivals, down a marginal 0.04%, extending its run as Thailand's most resilient major market. That continues the pattern we reported when Thailand logged 19.76 million arrivals with India third earlier in the summer.

Which markets are dragging Thailand down?

The pain is concentrated in short-haul Asia. Beyond Malaysia and South Korea, Japan fell 5.42% to 665,368, the UK slipped 3.44% to 677,689 and Germany eased 2.07% to 594,981. Russia was nearly flat at 1,179,872 (down 0.55%). The gainers besides China were Taiwan, up 6.57% to 705,713, and the United States, up 0.91% to 687,610.

A separate VnExpress tally covering January 1 to August 22 put revenue at 984.32 billion baht (US$29.8 billion), down 2.9% year on year, on 20.32 million visitors. The message is consistent across both datasets: volumes and receipts both trailing 2025.

Can Thailand still hit its 2026 target?

The ministry's bet is that peak season rescues the year. Thailand generated 2.7 trillion baht in total tourism revenue in 2025, including 1.53 trillion baht from 32.97 million foreign visitors, plus 1.16 trillion baht from 202 million domestic trips. Matching that in 2026 needs a strong final four months.

Two policy clouds hang over that bet. The visa-free stay cut to 30 days takes effect on September 15, shortening trips for long-haul visitors, and the proposed 450-baht tourist fee remains in play. The Tourism Authority of Thailand had already warned in May that it may cut its 33-million arrivals target, and it has since unveiled a 2027 tourism plan framed as a year of transformation.

The arithmetic behind that bet is tight but workable. Repeating 2025's 32.97 million full-year total from 20.94 million at end-August needs about 12 million visitors in four months, roughly the pace of a normal Thai peak season powered by European winter sun and Chinese New Year travel. A soft September, or confusion around the September 15 visa change, would leave no margin for error.

For Indian travellers, the steady numbers still make Thailand one of the best-value international escapes, and travelling Thailand cheaply from India is still very doable even as the kingdom chases richer visitors.

Frequently asked questions

How many tourists visited Thailand in the first eight months of 2026?

Thailand received 20,935,135 foreign tourists from January 1 to August 31, 2026, down 3.08% from the same period in 2025, according to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports. Tourism revenue for the period was 984.32 billion baht (US$29.8 billion), down 2.9%, per VnExpress.

Which countries send the most tourists to Thailand?

China leads with 3.54 million visitors (up 16%), followed by Malaysia with 2.66 million (down 12%) and India with 1.54 million (nearly flat). Russia, South Korea, Taiwan, the US, the UK, Japan and Germany complete the top ten for January to August 2026.

Why are Thailand arrivals falling?

The drop is driven by weak short-haul Asian markets, especially Malaysia (down 12%) and South Korea (down 25%), which together account for most of the shortfall. China's 16% rebound partly offsets the decline. Analysts also point to regional competition from Vietnam, Japan and Malaysia itself.

Will Thailand cut its 2026 arrivals target?

The Tourism Authority of Thailand warned in May 2026 that it may revise its 33-million target downward. The ministry currently says full-year arrivals and revenue should finish near 2025 levels (32.97 million visitors), which implies a strong September to December peak season.
