PHITEX 2026 — the Philippine Travel Exchange — runs from 7 to 14 September 2026. It is the country's foremost government-organised travel trade event, run by the Tourism Promotions Board, an attached agency of the Department of Tourism, and has operated since 1996.
A hosted exchange, not an exhibition
PHITEX does not work like a conventional hall-and-stands show. Qualified international buyers are hosted and matched with Philippine sellers for table-top business appointments, alongside knowledge sessions and destination familiarisation experiences.
The eight-day span reflects that structure. The appointment core occupies part of the week; the remainder is given to post-event tours that put buyers physically into the product they have just been sold. For a destination of more than 7,000 islands, that is not a courtesy — it is the only practical way to convey what is being contracted.
Why the government model matters
Because the Tourism Promotions Board selects and hosts the buyers, Philippine sellers meet pre-qualified counterparts rather than passing traffic. That favours smaller regional operators — island resorts, dive operators, provincial DMCs — who could not fund a stand at a commercial international show but can compete on product quality once seated across a table.
For buyers, the trade-off is an application process and a schedule set by the organiser rather than a diary of your own choosing.
Where it sits in the regional calendar
PHITEX falls in a dense fortnight. Arabian Travel Market opens on 14 September, IT&CMA in Bangkok follows on 22 September, and MATTA Fair in Kuala Lumpur ran 4–6 September. Buyers covering Southeast Asia broadly will be making choices.
The Philippines' position
The Philippines competes for the same regional and long-haul travellers as Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia, generally with fewer direct long-haul connections and a more dispersed geography. That makes trade relationships disproportionately important: much Philippine product reaches international travellers through operators who have been shown it in person, which is precisely what PHITEX exists to arrange.
Entertainment and integrated-resort development has become a visible part of the national pitch alongside the traditional beach and dive offer, broadening the buyer types the exchange attracts.
Applying as a buyer
Because the Tourism Promotions Board qualifies and hosts buyers, attendance is not simply a matter of registering. Applications open ahead of each edition and assess the buyer's business volume, market relevance and genuine intent to contract Philippine product.
Successful applicants typically receive support toward flights and accommodation in exchange for committing to the full appointment schedule and post-event tour. That is a real obligation — buyers who treat the fam trip as optional tend not to be invited back.
What Philippine sellers should prepare
The table-top format gives roughly twenty minutes per meeting. Sellers who arrive with rate sheets, clear inclusions, and honest answers on seasonality and access get further than those with brochures alone. Access is the recurring question: for island product, buyers need to know exactly how a client reaches it, from which gateway, on which carriers, and what happens when weather closes a route.
