The UK government now advises against all but essential travel within 20 kilometres of Thailand's land border with Cambodia and says land crossings between the two countries remain suspended, with key border temples closed and unexploded landmines in the area. The updated Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advice for Thailand, last updated 30 June 2026, follows fighting along parts of the border in July 2025 and further clashes in early December involving rocket and artillery fire. The warning is not a blanket ban on Thailand — it is a narrow 20km buffer along the frontier where the risk is highest — but it does invalidate many itineraries that cross by road, and it can void travel insurance if ignored.
What does the UK Thailand-Cambodia border warning actually say?
According to the FCDO Thailand travel advice overview and Entry requirements pages:
- Thailand-Cambodia border: FCDO advises against all but essential travel to areas within 20km of the land border with Cambodia.
- Thailand-Malaysia border: FCDO also advises against all but essential travel to Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat provinces and the districts of Chana, Thepa, Na Thawi and Saba Yoi in southern Songkhla, plus the Hat Yai to Padang Besar train line, due to regular attacks.
- Cause: Fighting occurred along parts of the Thailand-Cambodia border in July 2025, with further rocket and artillery clashes in early December. Land borders and crossings between Thailand and Cambodia remain suspended.
- Closed sites: Khao Phra Wihan (Preah Vihear) temple, Ta Kwai/Ta Krabey temple and Ta Muen Thom/Tamone Thom temple are closed. There are unexploded landmines in the area.
The advice carries a financial sting: the FCDO notes your travel insurance could be invalidated if you travel against its advice, a standard clause in most UK policies.
Are Thailand-Cambodia land crossings open in 2026?
No. The FCDO states land borders and crossings remain suspended. In practice that means:
- You cannot cross at Poipet-Aranyaprathet, the main corridor for Bangkok to Siem Reap buses and shared taxis.

Which temples and border areas are closed to tourists?
The three temple complexes named by the FCDO sit directly on or beside the disputed frontier and are on the front line of the December exchanges:
- Preah Vihear (Khao Phra Wihan): UNESCO-listed cliff-top temple whose access straddles the border. Closed and within the 20km advisory.
- Ta Kwai/Ta Krabey: smaller hill temple west of Preah Vihear, also closed.
- Ta Muen Thom/Tamone Thom: 11th-century Khmer temple on the Daniang range, closed.
Beyond temples, the warning notes unexploded landmines remain in border areas — a legacy hazard that makes even short walks off marked roads dangerous. Do not attempt to approach the border for photos or to look for informal crossings. If you are already near Surin, Buriram or Sa Kaeo provinces, stay well outside the 20km buffer.
